Community Guardians

Porirua Community Guardians supports groups of volunteers in patrolling their local and other areas. These include the Porirua central business district, Eastern Porirua, local bus transport and the northern suburban areas

Our team:

  • provide a safe point of contact for those who need help
  • report safety and nuisance issues, such as tagging/graffiti, faulty lighting, damaged seats and so on
  • reduce property damage, theft and injury by ‘just being there’
  • promote a family friendly atmosphere at major events such as the Festival of the Elements, Creekfest and the like
  • are ambassadors for the City
  • take part in other community initiatives such as car park safety checks
  • visit shops and business premises and deliver safety messages
  • act as extra eyes and ears for the local Police

Street Makeovers

The Guardians are regular supporters of the annual Street Makeover organised by Housing Corporation in Eastern Porirua that focuses on high crime and/or uncared for neighbourhoods by building stronger, healthier and safer communities through:

  • safety/crime prevention audits and changes for the areas
  • enhancing the environment with things such as rubbish removal, fence building, cleaning and painting
  • getting neighbours together and developing stronger local relationships

Whitby Community Guardians

Our colleagues in the northern suburb of Whitby

  • Carry out random mobile evening patrols in the area from Pauatahanui through to Aotea Lagoon.
  • Report to appropriate authorities/businesses/schools, any instances of vandalism, graffiti, street lighting issues and water leaks.
  • Act as an extra set of eyes and ears for the Police, and advise them accordingly.
